PDE Renewal Exam Guide

The PDE renewal exam covers the same 5 sections as the full exam but with different weights. Section 2 (Ingesting) drops from ~25% to ~10%, while Sections 3 (Storing) and 4 (Analysis) each increase to ~25%. The exam is 1 hour, 20 scenario-based questions, with no case studies and heavier emphasis on modern services.

Section-by-Section: What the Renewal Emphasizes

§1 Designing Data Processing Systems (~25% renewal / ~22% full)

Slight increase. The renewal focuses on:

  • Data sovereignty and residency — multi-region vs dual-region, data localization requirements
  • LLM-powered query generation — using generative AI to create SQL queries
  • Data governance at scale — VPC Service Controls, Cloud DLP, IAM for cross-project data access

§2 Ingesting and Processing (~10% renewal / ~25% full)

Significantly reduced. The renewal assumes you know Dataflow and Dataproc. Focus narrows to:

  • AI enrichment during ingestion — embedding generation, entity extraction in pipelines
  • Orchestration — Cloud Composer patterns, Workflows for lightweight chaining

§3 Storing the Data (~25% renewal / ~20% full)

Increased weight — the biggest renewal differentiator. Modern services are the core:

  • BigLake — unified analytics across Cloud Storage, S3, and Azure Blob with fine-grained IAM
  • AlloyDB — when to choose it vs Cloud SQL vs Spanner for high-performance relational workloads
  • Dataplex — data mesh governance, lineage, quality validation, Dataplex Catalog
  • Federated governance — governing distributed data without centralizing it

§4 Analysis and ML (~25% renewal / ~15% full)

Largest increase — reflecting the AI-readiness shift in GCP data engineering:

  • RAG and embeddings — preparing unstructured data for retrieval-augmented generation
  • BigQuery ML vector search — embedding generation and nearest-neighbor queries
  • Analytics Hub — zero-copy data sharing, authorized datasets
  • Cloud DLP masking — masking PII for analytics (preserving utility, not just detection)

§5 Maintaining and Automating (~15% renewal / ~18% full)

Slightly reduced. The renewal narrows to:

  • Scheduling and capacity management — BigQuery Editions, reservations, slot management
  • Observability — Cloud Monitoring, Logging, BigQuery admin panel
  • Fault tolerance patterns — multi-region, data replication, failover

Renewal exam strategy

With only 20 questions and 1 hour, every question counts. The renewal rewards depth over breadth:

  1. Don't re-study basics. You passed the full exam. The renewal won't ask you what Pub/Sub is — it'll ask you which service to choose for a specific scenario where Pub/Sub is one of four options.
  2. Focus on modern service differentiation. Know exactly when to choose BigLake vs BigQuery external tables, AlloyDB vs Cloud SQL, Dataplex vs custom governance.
  3. Practice scenario-style elimination. Every renewal question is a scenario with 4 plausible options. The skill is elimination, not recall.
  4. Spend 60% of prep time on §3 and §4. These two sections make up ~50% of the renewal exam.

How to Prepare

  1. Follow the 2-Week Refresher Plan — designed specifically for renewers.
  2. Practice with scenario-style questions filtered for renewal-relevant services.
  3. Use WiseOwl Tutor™ with the renewal persona — peer-level tutoring that respects your experience.
  4. Review the official PDE certification page.
